St. Andrew's Chapel

St. Andrew's Chapel
at Mountainside United Church

The new combined congregation of St. Andrew’s-Dominion-Douglas United Church began officially on January 6, 1985 at the old St. Andrew's site. But members were already worshiping together during the fall of the previous year. It had been decided that the newer and more versatile building of St. Andrew’s (1967) would be sold. But beforehand the congregations gathered on Sundays for worship at the St. Andrew’s site while extensive renovations were carried out at the older Dominion-Douglas building (6 September 1914 & 17 April 1927). The first service at the newly renovated building on the Boulevard, our permanent House of Worship, was Jan 20, 1985.

The St. Andrew’s Chapel was transplanted to a specially created space at the east end of Tees Hall at D-D, displaying the beautiful tapestry hangings depicting the life of Andrew the Apostle made by Hedy Lubbers and the colourful stained-glass windows designed and executed by her husband Theodore Lubbers’ studio. The red and blue carpet and wooden ceiling were custom made for this new space. The chapel was just the right size for small ceremonies and for informal Sunday worship services in the summertime.
