Our History
The United Church of Canada
Welcome to The United Church of Canada, a church with a rich, progressive, and continuing history of welcoming all in the name of Christ.
The United Church of Canada came together in 1925, through a union of Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational churches, one of the first ecumenical unions in the world to bring together major Christian denominations into one body.
The United Church of Canada has a long history of welcoming people of all backgrounds and orientations, along with a commitment to social justice.

Mountainside United Church
Like the United Church of Canada itself, the Mountainside United we know today
is an amalgamation of numerous churches of various denominations over many years.
It started with Dominion Square Methodist Church built in 1865. In 1925 Douglas Methodist amalgamated with Dominion Square Methodist and became Dominion Douglas United on The Boulevard in Westmount.
Years later, in 1985 St. Andrew's United in Westmount amalgamated with Dominion Douglas to become St. Andrews-Dominion Douglas.
Finally, when Erskine and American United Church on Sherbrooke St. (now La Salle Bourgie) amalgamated with St. Andrew's-Dominion Douglas in 2004, the name was changed to Mountainside United.
In 2018 the church on the Boulevard was sold. In 2022 we began our current spiritual journey at the Birks Heritage Chapel on McGill campus.
Mountainside represents the coming together of many rich histories of different denominations and congregations.
